English UK member, United International College (UIC), won a prestigious UK Award for Innovation last night for their 'Communication Station', a part of their English programme that sees students broadcasting a radio programme. A delighted Dan Humm Soriano, accompanied by David Wilkins and Ben Glynne, collected the award from host Jeremy Harmer.
On an evening of high drama and surprises, the BBC scooped two of the three prestigious ELTon UK Awards for Innovation for 'Rinku's World' and 'BBCe', the latter being a unique radio entertainment and current affairs programme designed for the Egyptian market.
The Macmillan Education Innovative Writing Award went to the fiery-haired Simona Petrescu from Romania for her idea to create a Professional English for Human Resources course.
The Cambridge ESOL International Award went to 'Fiction in Action: Whodunit', a crime-based reading text for intermediate students produced by ABAX ELT.
The inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award went to the popular authors of the legendary 'Strategies' coursebook series, Brian Abbs and Ingrid Freebairn.
The ELTon event, which is the only international awards event that recognises and celebrates innovation in ELT, was excellently-hosted by the loquacious Jeremy Harmer, who was a late replacement for the bed-bound DJ Nihal.
You can meet and find out more about some of the winners and nominees from this year's awards at the English UK ELT Management Conference in Manchester on 4 March.
