Save on copying and film licences
English UK member centres can save money by joining the English UK schemes for paying fees to the Copyright Licensing Agency (CLA) and the Motion Picture Licensing Company (MPLC). Our payment schemes enable members to receive a large discount on copying licences (required if you copy and reuse content from print and digital publications) and roughly a 20% discount on film licences (required if you show films intended for home use).
For more details or to join the license fee payment scheme contact the membership team.
Copyright Licensing Agency licences
Organisations that make copies of content protected by copyright must, under copyright law, have a licence from the CLA. If they do not hold a licence they must ensure that no material protected by copyright is copied, shared or reused. The licence provides annual blanket permissions to copy and reuse content from both print and digital publications.
Under the English UK payment scheme, the CLA licence fee is based on member centres' student week data. English UK collects these fees on behalf of the CLA in return for a significant (50%+) discount on the standard CLA rate.
If you feel you do not need a licence, you can cancel your renewal. You should write to Alice Marcolin confirming that you understand the consequences of committing copyright infringement.

Motion Picture Licensing Company licences
English language teaching centres which show audiovisual content protected by copyright bought for home use to a wider audience, such as a group of students at a social programme film night, must have this licence.
English UK has arranged a bulk licence for payment of MPLC fees, which includes a discount of roughly 20% on the full fee.
For 2024/25:
- Year-round members pay £268 + VAT per centre. Members may sign up for the scheme on a pro-rata basis at any time during the year.
- Summer centres open for less than 6 months during the year benefit from a seasonal operators licence for a flat fee of £146 + VAT per year.
Please note that all members currently licensed directly with MPLC will be referred to English UK at the time of their renewal.
The licence covers the public performance of films or TV shows on DVD/ Blu-ray, downloads, streaming, broadcast television, pay TV and video on demand.
