English UK condemns racist riots

English UK condemns the racist violence that has broken out across the UK over the past week.

As an organisation that celebrates diversity, inclusion, international exchange and learning, we stand firmly against racism and discrimination. Everyone has the right to live, work and study safely.

We recognise that many people in our community will worry about their safety and that of their family, friends and colleagues.

Supporting students, staff and each other

If you are an ELT student, speak to the staff at your teaching centre. They are there to support you. Understandably, you may feel concerned, and it is important to talk about how you are feeling and ask for the support you need.

If you are working at an ELT centre and you feel worried, talk to your colleagues and management team.

If you are an English UK member, please be prepared to provide extra support, care, and flexibility for your staff and students. This is especially true if your team or learners include refugees, migrants, and people from minority and racialised communities. We encourage you to stay aware of the situation, assess whether you are in a high-risk area, and take appropriate steps.

Use the members' forum to connect with other centres in your area and share your experiences.

The vital role of intercultural understanding

These horrific acts of racist violence make English UK's commitment to antiracism and the role of UK ELT in transforming lives through learning and intercultural understanding even more vital. We are proud to welcome students from all around the world. We are proud to collaborate with RefuAid, a charity that works to restore independence and dignity to refugees.

We are heartened to see diverse communities unite to repair damage and support one another. We must stay connected across our communities, helping each other and ensuring the safety and wellbeing of our students, staff and neighbours.

Our thoughts are with all those affected by recent events.
