ELT campaigning continues after summer pause

ELT campaigning continues after summer pause

Our campaign for government support for ELT has started up again with a fantastic visit from London Labour MP Rupa Huq to a member centre in her constituency.

MP visit to member centre West London English School in Ealing

Dr Huq, who is a great supporter of the industry, addressed students at West London English School. English UK membership director Huan Japes, who leads our public affairs work, was also present.

He said: 'It was a great meeting with WLES students and staff. The students enjoyed the presentation – she had a very interesting discussion with a Japanese student on how Ealing's cultural heritage could be better presented, and they were fascinated by her presentation on the work of an MP.

'She was also listening carefully to what the staff told her. They would like her to push the issue of student work rights in Parliament, perhaps through an end-of-day point of order. This needs involvement from her constituents.

'We will work with her office on this and ensure that whatever happens gets wider publicity. We're very grateful to her and the English UK centres involved and will be keeping up this momentum now the busy summer period for our members is coming to a close. Our own campaigning has of course continued through the summer but with political holidays and members' busiest periods much of what we do then is behind the scenes.'

Are you able to host your MP?

Our next major push is to get ELT issues mentioned during a House of Lords debate on the UK-EU relationship later in September, and we are keen to support any member who is able to contact or host their MP. MPs' first duties are to their constituents and therefore your campaigning is particularly valuable: please get in touch with Huan, Naadiya or Sue at PublicAffairs@englishuk.com for any public affairs support you need
