First round of English UK Member Roadshows complete
4 May 2016

With the first round of English UK member roadshows complete, we are now considering how to develop the programme in future.

Since June 2015, we've visited ten regions in order to meet as many members as possible, with free meetings where we answer your questions, talk about English UK's major campaigns, and discuss how to develop our association to make it better for you.

The Roadshows were the brainchild of our late Chief Executive Eddie Byers, who thought it was a direct way to build engagement with you. He only managed to attend the first two meetings before his death in November, but was very enthusiastic about the programme and the chance to meet as many members as possible.

Announcing the series at the 2015 AGM, he said: "We want to take the opportunity to communicate better. We are creating a new series of Roadshow events around the country, free of charge to members to enable broader discussions of the issues we all face, and we will do that free of charge."

The five main aims of the programme were to:

  • reach the wider English UK membership
  • bring colleagues together locally
  • examine current themes and/or challenges members are facing
  • gain feedback on English UK activities and services
  • provide the opportunity for members to meet the English UK team

Almost 30 per cent of our members attended one of the events, presented by a mix of senior English UK staff and board members, with 98 per cent saying they would recommend them to others. We'd like to thank everyone who came, all the member centres who allowed us to use their centres for our meetings, and also Cambridge English for sponsoring the programme.

We will be presenting a full report on the first Roadshows to the English UK Annual Conference & AGM on May 19 and 20, which will give more detail on issues highlighted by members and much more.
